Dr. Shahab Toursavadkohi is the Bartley P. Griffith Professor of Surgery and Innovation and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and School of Medicine. He serves as Co-Director of the Center for Aortic Disease and Director of the UMMC Annual Vascular Surgery Symposium.
He earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, completed his general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital, and his vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland, where he joined the faculty.
Dr. Toursavadkohi specializes in the treatment of complex aortic and thoracoabdominal aneurysms and dissections, with a focus on advanced endovascular and hybrid techniques. In 2016, he founded the nation’s first Vascular Acute Care Surgery (VACS) program, providing 24/7 dedicated vascular emergency coverage. He has been instrumental in establishing the Center for Aortic Disease, now a nationally recognized program for complex aortic care.
A pioneer in fenestrated and branched endovascular aortic repair, Dr. Toursavadkohi has helped position the University of Maryland as one of the few centers capable of treating aortic disease from the aortic valve to the iliac arteries. His work has led to the development of EndoArch and Endo-Bentall procedures, offering selected high-risk patients minimally invasive alternatives to traditional open aortic surgery.
