With the recent approval of CMS covering transfemoral carotid artery stenting for symptomatic patients even in standard risk patients, the management of symptomatic carotid stenosis has become somewhat controversial. Most authorities still believe carotid endarterectomy combined with medical therapy is the optimal and first line of intervention while others advocate transcarotid artery revascularization or transfemoral carotid artery stenting in standard risk patients. This session will delineate all these options and the pros and cons of each. In addition, since the CREST 2 trial has been completed and perhaps the results will be shown by the end of the year, it is only logical to include this data in this session.
