Pooria Nakhaei, MD, MBA, is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, where he has spent the past three years working under the mentorship of Dr. Mahmoud B. Malas. After receiving his MD and MBA from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, he moved to the United States to continue his academic training in vascular surgery research. His work focuses on carotid artery disease, aortic pathology, peripheral arterial disease, and outcomes research. More broadly, he is interested in improving decision-making strategies by looking beyond conventional risk factors and incorporating disease-specific and patient-centered characteristics into clinical care. He is particularly interested in identifying asymptomatic carotid patients who may be at higher risk for stroke and may benefit from revascularization before a major neurologic event occurs. He is drawn to vascular surgery for its blend of technical complexity, rapidly evolving endovascular therapies, and meaningful long-term impact on patients’ lives.
