Matthew R. Smeds, MD, DFSVS, DABS, FACS is a Professor of Surgery with tenure at Saint Louis University and a vascular surgeon at SSM Saint Louis University Hospital. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases, Innovations and Techniques (JVSCIT) and serves as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Smeds is an active national leader in vascular surgery, currently serving on the Executive Committees of both the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society, as well as on multiple committees within the Society for Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Smeds previously served as Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Program Director of both the Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency and Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Saint Louis University. His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of vascular and endovascular surgery, with particular interest in emerging technologies and complex aortic, peripheral arterial, and venous disease.
He has served as site principal investigator on numerous multicenter clinical trials, including studies evaluating novel therapies such as the VenoValve, thoracic and abdominal aortic devices, dialysis access technologies, and vascular trauma interventions. His academic interests include surgical education, outcomes research, and risk factor modification, particularly tobacco cessation.
Dr. Smeds is the founder and course director of APEX-vS, a national cadaver-based training program focused on advanced vascular surgical exposures.
