Kakra Hughes, MD, PhD, DFSVS, FACS is a Tenured Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Vice Chair for Research and Faculty Development for the Department of Surgery at Howard University and Howard University Hospital. Dr. Hughes graduated from medical school at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and trained in General Surgery at Los Angeles County’s Charles Drew University/Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital. He subsequently obtained his training in Vascular Surgery from Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center followed by an additional year of Endovascular Surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute. Dr. Hughes also holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical and Translational Research from Georgetown University and a PhD in Health Services Research from the University of Maryland at College Park’s School of Public Health. He is a distinguished fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery and serves on the SVS’s Program Committee as well as SVS’s Conflict of Interest Committee. He currently serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, associate editor for Annals of Vascular Surgery and associate editor for the Journal of the National Medical Association. He previously served as a section editor for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and remains on its editorial board.
