Dr. Matsumura is a practicing vascular surgeon and Professor of Surgery (Adjoint) at University of Colorado School of Medicine. His clinical interests are centered on endovascular treatment of carotid stenosis, thoracic aortic disease, lower extremity ischemia, deep venous thrombosis, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Recently, he has expanded interest in cosurgery and spine exposure surgery. He is involved regularly in the educational curriculum of students, residents, and doctors in practice in all specialties; and has been involved in the face-to-face minimally-invasive training of physicians on six continents. His research interests are concentrated on multicenter clinical trials of medical and endovascular treatment of carotid stenosis and aortic aneurysm. He has sustained extramural funding for his core imaging laboratory since 1998, and has mentored over 35 undergraduates, medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and junior faculty, over 70% of whom are members of underrepresented groups. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and edited nine books. He enjoys fishing in the summer and skiing in the winter.
