Dr. Jamal Hoballah received his MD from the American University of Beirut (AUB). He completed his General Surgery residency, and critical care and trauma fellowship at New York University, and his vascular surgery training at the University of Iowa (UIHC).
Dr. Hoballah then joined the Department of Surgery at UIHC where he became tenured professor of surgery, director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship program, chairman of the Vascular Surgery Division and surgical director of the UIHC Heart and Vascular Center. In 2008, Dr. Hoballah returned to AUB as Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Hoballah is Board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery, and surgical critical care.
Dr. Hoballah’s clinical and research interest include endovascular surgery, infrainguinal revascularization, acute limb ischemia, vascular trauma and surgical education. He authored and co-authored over 140 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 15 surgical books and 40 book chapters.
Dr. Hoballah is a distinguished fellow of the SVS. He is past president of the Iowa Vascular Society, the Lebanese Society for Vascular Surgery (LSVS), and founding President of the Pan-Arab Vascular Surgery Society (PAVSS). He served as Chair of the International Relations Committee of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
Dr. Hoballah has received several awards including Attending of the Year at NYU in 1989, Teacher of the Year award at the University of Iowa in 1996, Best Doctors in America list for several years, the honorary fellowship of the American Surgical Association (ASA) in 2019, and the honorary fellowship of the ACS in 2024.
